Creative Loafing Tampa Features Yummy House Again!

Best Places in Tampa for Asain Noodles

Creative Loafing once again recommends Yummy House on Hillsborough for one of the best choices for Asian noodles.

From the Article: The original Yummy House location was a cozy nook off of Tampa’s Waters Avenue. It was unfortunately damaged in a neighboring nail salon fire late last year, which left faithful Bay area customers with two options: a new location in South Tampa, or the great, big dining room in East Tampa (the mini-chain of high-quality Chinese food also has restos in Orlando, Ocala, Gainesville and Sarasota). We’re recommending the latter and encouraging you to take a deep breath before lifting up the menu, which is literally a book in which nearly two dozen noodle dishes await your already-pursed lips. Lo mein is covered, and the wonton noodles and beef stew (egg noodz or rice ones) both swim in seafood broth. A Japanese-style udon soup does the same, and there are also Singapore-style rice noodles with barbecue pork and angel hair-esque vermicelli noodz. Yummy House South Receives Instant Recognition

Laura Reiley spends her time reviewing many Tampa Bay Area restaurants, and we’re honored to be included in this years “List of Top 50 Restaurants in Tampa Bay in 2018.”

From the article: “The first Yummy House on Waters Street, opened in 2008, was no reservations, no booze, no frills, an instant hit on the strength of its authentic Hong Kong-style food. Owner John Zhao realized he was on to something. He followed that with the Hillsborough Avenue location in 2011, a Sarasota outpost in 2012, Gainesville in 2013, Ocala in 2014, then Orlando and, finally, South Tampa at the end of 2017. For a couple of years, he had been talking about doing something different, not a Yummy House but a more loosely Asian noodle concept. When he found the old bank building on Dale Mabry near Kennedy Boulevard, there was one problem: It was too big for noodles at 12,000 square feet. So he decided to go for another Yummy House, this one two stories with a private party space upstairs that can be utilized for regular service when the dim sum throngs get too dense downstairs. Turns out, there’s no such thing as too much Yummy.”

Yummy House Tampa - Our continued focus on quality.

Yummy House Tampa - Serving quality and a continued commitment.

Yummy House Tampa on Waters Ave. is our oldest location, but we’ve learned a lot through the years. We have opened successful restaurants in Ocala, Orlando, Gainesville, and Sarasota. Offering authentic Cantonese cuisine as well as Dim Sum at these other locations has built a loyal and strong customer base, enough that it’s time focus back on our first, and original location. We are very thankful for our loyal customers, and those who tell a friend to try “Yummy House in Tampa” for the first time.

There is always a lot to learn in the restaurant business, but offering a consistently great product, remaining passionate about customers and the food they eat will always be a recipe for success, and that is the way it will stay.

Yummy House Tampa on Waters has been open for seven years now, we can’t believe it’s been that long. While placing focus on other locations, we are circling back to what started Yummy House right at our first location, and for those who have eaten at this location - we thank everyone in our community. We will continue to provide the highest quality Chinese cuisine to the Tampa Bay Area.

Owner of Yummy House plans to open fast-casual noodle resteraunt.

Yummy House Owner on to something big for Florida!

John Zhao, 35, says he’s been in the restaurant business for 24 years. Not legally he hasn’t, but he started working at a tender age in restaurant kitchens in Belize, going on to debut Yummy House on Waters Avenue in Tampa in 2008 at the age of 28.

In August, he aims to unveil something all new: the Tampa Bay area’s first authentic pan-Asian noodle house. Yummy Bowl and Asian Noodle Bar will follow a Chipotle-like model: Pick your noodles (Korean, Chinese, Japanese or Vietnamese), pick your ingredients (vegetables, chicken, beef or seafood) and then select your broth.

Zhao has already proved himself expert at building a brand: His Hillsborough Avenue Yummy House Bistro opened in 2011, a Sarasota outpost launched in 2012, Gainesville in 2013, Ocala in 2014 and Orlando will open in June. He says Tampa is a great area for trying out a new concept.

“I’ve been looking for an Asian noodle bar concept for at least five years, but I haven’t been 100 percent ready. My dream has always been a bigger concept. I want to launch a good concept that can open up everywhere.”

Business confidence serves up new restaurants in Ocala

By Rick Allen - Ocala.com

John Zhoa also was urged by friends here to look at Ocala as a site for another of his Yummy House Chinese restaurants.
He finally did, and liked what he saw. With his partner Tommy Tang, he opened the Yummy House at Thanksgiving.

This is an actual sit-down Chinese restaurant — one of few in the county — that boasts a vast dim sum menu for lunch. And that’s something Ocala has not had before.

This is an ancient Chinese “breakfast,” Zhoa explained, that’s now more like a brunch food. “Or it’s like Chinese tapas,” he added.

These “tapas” — bite-size dumplings and other goodies such as beef, shrimp, scallops and pork — have been catching on in the United States the past couple of decades. “This is the way the Cantonese eat brunch on weekends,” he said. “I’m sure it’s very new to the people of Ocala. I think it’s about time for them to experience something different.”

Featured in: Tampa Bay Restaurants to try in 2015

Coming up with 12 (and only 12) dining recommendations for 2015 was a tough homework assignment. Unless you’ve been stranded on a deserted island for the past couple of years, you already know who the “cool kids” on the block are, and anyone with even the most remote interest in the Tampa Bay dining scene is familiar with our iconic epicurean jewels. We have decent national chains aplenty, but big chain restaurant dining of any caliber is simply not my preferred experience.

Yummy House China Bistro, Tampa: Yummy, indeed! This authentic Chinese restaurant offers a sleek, nouveau atmosphere, real chopsticks that don’t come in little paper sleeves, professional servers and a phonebook-sized menu. For you Andrew Zimmern types, outré ingredients like frog, sea cucumber and jellyfish are prominently featured in tantalizing applications.

A good reason to print the word ‘Yummy’

See our article on Ocala.com - Yummy House Opens in Ocala

A friend maintains that any adult using the word “yummy” is being childish.

So, what’s a dining columnist to do? After all, I’m talking about the Yummy House that’s coming to Ocala. Not only coming to Ocala, but — barring any last-minute glitches — will be open Friday. I’m figuring since this is a proper noun, it’s OK ...

This Tampa-based chain of actual sit-down Chinese restaurants features Cantonese-style fare prepared the way they cook it in Hong Kong, San Francisco and New York. In fact, chefs working at the various Yummy sites to date — three in Tampa and one each in Sarasota and Gainesville — were trained in either San Francisco or New York, said co-owner John Zhoa.

He was trained as a chef in San Francisco.

“I’ve been in a kitchen for 23 years, since I was 12,” he said.

His partner and co-owner, Tommy Tang, was learning Cantonese Hong Kong-style under the tutelage of chef Li Wen.

“People used to call him the ‘Bruce Lee of the kitchen’ in San Francisco,” Zhoa said. “He taught Tommy, and Tommy taught me.

“This is the real deal.”

Yummy House wins “readers pick” Best of the Bay for the 4th year in a row

Yummy House wins Best of the Bay - Best Chinese Restaurant, in the food and drink category for the 4th year in a row.

Thank you Tampa, for helping us succeed, and supporting us for 4 years straight!

Yummy House included in Top 50 restaurants in Tampa Bay 2013

By Laura Reiley

Why: In high season, the newish Sarasota location has snowbirds lined up around the block. At the fancier bistro location on Hillsborough Avenue the crowds can get thick, but it’s at the original Waters spot where your mettle may truly be tested. Every table full, I’ve been told by a manager, “We’re full, just go home,” only to persevere out in the rain until a table opened up so I could get my salt and pepper tofu, seafood hot and sour soup and Hong Kong-style roast duck.

What to order: Mix it up with decadent (steamed whole fish with black bean sauce or sizzling honey pepper scallops) and healthy (snow pea tips or other Chinese greens). And when in doubt, ask for guidance.

Yummy House opens in Gainesville

Yummy House China Bistro opened Friday at 7605 Newberry Road, the former KFC location that last housed the short-lived Asian Cafe.

Yummy House offers real Cantonese dim sum - which includes a wide variety of small-portion dishes - and authentic Chinese food.

Owners John Zhao and Tommy Tang are from Toishan, China, and own four other Yummy House restaurants - three in Tampa and one in Sarasota.

Yummy House Voted Best Restaurant for an Authentic Meal

Yummy House China Bistro was voted best resteraunt for an authentic meal by TBO.com.

People told John Zhao he was crazy to put an upscale Chinese restaurant in east Tampa.

But in the two months since Yummy House China Bistro opened on Hillsborough Avenue, some 300 customers a day are proving Zhao is not only sane, but possibly brilliant.

“It’s going unbelievable,’’ says the 31-year-old restaurateur, who co-owns the original Yummy House on west Waters Avenue with executive chef Tommy Tang.

So much so, the pair is opening yet another eatery, the Country Pumpkin Café, beside the bistro. Look for a third Yummy House in Clearwater in the coming months.

Can there really be this much demand for Chinese food?

On a recent Wednesday evening, Zhao counted 293 customers. Lunchtime, he says, typically has a 30-minute wait. And almost every weekend, large parties are booking the venue for special celebrations.

Most customers, he says, are regulars who got hooked on the first Yummy House, a tiny strip-mall restaurant with a cult-like following that prodded Zhao to search for bigger, fancier digs.
